Traveling in Vietnam during Tet holiday

Last updated on
February 24, 2019

Tet or Lunar New Year is the most important and sacred celebration for Vietnamese people. The calculation of Tet is coordinated in accordance with the cycles of the moon. In 2017, Tet in Vietnam will take place between the 28th and 31st of January.

While traveling during Tet, you will see that Vietnamese New Year is very different from the Chinese equivalent with different customs and weather. Here are some tips for those traveling to Vietnam during Tet Holiday.

1. Book transportation in advance

In the month leading up to Tet, it is usually difficult to book any kind of transportation. Many people will be traveling to and from their hometowns. Late January is a very busy period, so it is important to remember to make bookings well in advance.

International transportation, particularly airlines, will not be affected during the holiday season. If you intend to fly in or out of Vietnam during Tet, there is no need to worry.

One thing to bear in mind about transportation during Tet in Vietnam is that it will be very crowded for half of the month before Tet, but in the first few days of the New Year, you will experience an unusual peace and tranquillity in even the largest cities. Hanoi is a typical example because Tet is a time for family reunion. As people leave the city to gather with their families, you will see a beautifully pure side of Hanoi which cannot be seen at any other time of year.

2. Get prepared in first three days of New Year

Be aware that the vast majority of shops and markets will close during the first three days of the New Year. If you need any supplies for traveling around the country, make sure you are well prepared beforehand.

After the 3rd of January (see lunar calendar), supermarkets and grocery stores will be open for business as normal. However, restaurants and street food might not open again until as late as the 10th.

As well as shopping, sightseeing will be limited during Tet holiday. Many tourist sites will be closed for at least three to four days. We strongly advise that you research schedules carefully and plan your itinerary accordingly.

3. Be a good bargainer

During Tet, prices will be higher than usual for many goods and services. This is not just the case for travelers, as local people are also overcharged on these days.

Our tip is to choose to use the services of well-known and established brands. It is better to eat in a restaurant with fixed prices rather than street food stalls where you are at risk of being overcharged. Remember to check the price before buying anything. In Vietnam, you can always get a good deal if you know how to bargain.

Hopefully, with these tips, you will have a great time traveling in Vietnam during Tet!
